Emirate Xaaron is here!

under Wassup at 1:52 am on February 28th, 2009

Its been 2 years, 3 months and 9 days since my last major computing addition. I’ve always wanted to get a laptop and now I actually have one. I’ve been scouting since Diwali and realised then that my laptop would be a Dell. I liked the Dell XPS M1530 (the older brother of the award winning Dell XPS M1330) but when I finally decided to place an order in February, I was told that it was unwise to do so considering that the XPS line was being “killed”. As a result I kept looking and came across the Dell Studio XPS 16.

I ordered the laptop on the 11th of February, 2009 and it arrived after an extremely delayed delivery period of 14 days on the 25th of February, 2009.

I give you Emirate Xaaron. Here’s the configuration for this laptop.

Processor

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz/1066 FSB/3 MB Cache)

4GB (2 X 2GB) Dual Channel 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM

Video Card 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
LCD Panel 16" 720p WXGA (1366×768) Anti-Glare WLED Display with 2.0MP webcam
Hard Drive claims accutane atlanta

320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit Edition (English)
Wireless Card Intel Wi-Fi Link 5300 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card

Night Dell The laptop has a backlit keyboard which is pretty cool. I thought I’d never use it but I find it to be quite useful. It has Sensible Vision’s FastAccess which is pretty neat though it has one issue. It takes forever to boot the inbuilt web camera so on boot, I need to type the password :P

Also, after using the laptop for 6 odd hours, it does become a tad bit warm :P It has pretty good sound quality and the 720p screen is crisp! :)

It is also important to note that I moved to MTNL Triband and the change of ISP feels great. The plan is a bit restrictive but I get good speeds and I have unlimited data transfers during the night. During the day, I can download 1.5GB a month. I also go a Netgear DG834 for wireless access for my router. Actually, I got it before I even ordered the laptop :P

Tonight I set up dual monitors just for fun. The desktop is downloading files on my uTorrent queue while the laptop is being used to write this post, among doing other things. I’ve installed UltraMon and tried to make good use of the extra screen real estate and I must say, this does feel a lot more comfortable. I can even watch TV and work at the same time :P

I’ll leave you with a few snaps. Enjoy.

Happy New Year

under General Stuff at 3:54 pm on January 1st, 2009

2008 was a great year. I need not restate all the great things that happened during the course of the year. Other than the 12th of December, I’d have to say the year was as perfect as it could be for me. Of course, I am not including all the idiots bombing up various places in my country.. that’s just stupid and its a given. :dodgy:

The new year is here and I had a good start to it being the first customer at Baskin-Robins and getting a 33% off while there with my friends after dinner. We walked home, made a few calls to people ;) I just finished watching Slumdog Millionaire, a movie that was recommended by Volv a few days ago and I must say, it didn’t disappoint. I loved it :)

Lot of work to do now this year, like every other I guess.. so lets get to it, I say!
Happy New Year to all you sillies out there. Hope you have a great year! :) viagra car decals

Merry Christmas!

under General Stuff at 12:16 am on December 25th, 2008

Here we are.. its christmas again! The past few months have been really crazy, December more than any of them :) Exams have progressively been going better and in the last one I really felt like I was back to my old self with all the preparation I did, last minute albeit. I’m hoping the last paper on the 29th will go really well.

Things have been complicated to say the least. I know what are the 3 things I’d like this Christmas and I’m hoping they’ll come true. It felt good to get a card earlier today (on Christmas Eve) from dt.

I’m going to work on something as a small project today which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I needed some help with the regexp which dt finally got the time to help me with so cheers to him!

Merry Christmas! May you all have a great year ahead :)

Self note: Baseball session on the 23rd of December, 2008 at 18:45 was fun. :P

Three of my favourite letters..

under General Stuff at 2:19 am on December 2nd, 2008

Its possibly the most sought after syllable in the English reason. Everyone wants to hear it, for different reasons albeit. I heard it today and I must say, I’m happy yet surprisingly unchanged. The world is still moving along (as expected) and I have still not started studying for my exam (as expected, I guess :P)

Remember, Remember the First of December… though there was no gunpowder treason or plot. :)

December the 2nd seems like a nice day to study up on Management Information Systems, don’t you think? I’ll be off then! :) mississauga breast augmentation

Sweet November

under General Stuff at 8:40 pm on November 23rd, 2008

Possibly the most eventful month (if you ignore Imagine Cup 08 and everything that has happened as a result) this year :P I’ve been busy this month so much so that I’ve almost completely stopped going on IRC and I rarely check up on any of the online forums I volunteer on. I almost have my Letters of Recommendations done. I need to go pick them up this around Tuesday and I’ve almost finished my Academic Resume. I have selected my specialisation for my Masters. I’m going to be doing.. *drum roll please* a Masters in Computer Science Specializing in High Performance Computing and Simulation. Now we need universities.. I’m open to suggestions for anything within my budget :P brite minnie party

My cheque finally came from Redmond. The amount was $2500 (approx INR 1,25,000 with current rates) but had a small typo. My name was printed as “Karum claritin croup

instead of “Karunbut that’s better than the mistake that they apparently made on the first cheque that was sent out (it seemingly said my name was “John Anderton”) It seems it will take 3-4 weeks to encash. Are you sure we’re not in 1985?

Also I’ve met up with an old friend and we’ve been hanging out a lot off late. This is what happens when two extremely bored people meet. At least I get quite a bit of brownies out of it. Too bad I stopped eating them around last week :(

Basically its been a really hectic month with a lot of thinking, writing, decision making and time wasting (read: going out for no reason). Exams are nearly here. I think I should start studying later this week. I’ve not done any work on DarkLight and I’m kinda sad though not unexpected. Its all the more work for the Jan-Mar period. Clearly someone won’t be seeing me at all during that time frame :P

I’ll leave you with another clue to decipher as I so often do. You never know, Nelson might be the one who leaves this time and Sara the one who is left standing.

Wants vs Needs

under General Stuff at 7:44 pm on September 10th, 2008

muscle risperdal lithium tremors jerking and

I’m sure everyone was told as a kid to categorize needs into “wants” and “needs”. Well, last night I learnt that I must do the same with things I had to do. Can’t believe I never thought of it earlier. I’m sure I must have gone with doing the thing that I wanted to do versus the thing I needed to at least half a million times already in my life. Though having to do the thing you need to over the one you want to feels like shit, I guess its important. I have a feeling I’ll have to do this a lot in the next few months. So if you see me pick things that I don’t particularly enjoy doing over ones which I love, know that I’m not crazy :P

For those who have no idea wtf I’m going on about, try figuring out why putting “theory to practice” is so important to me :)

That's two off my todo list..

under General Stuff at 12:40 am on August 31st, 2008

keith download free Well not really. :P Ever witnessed a bomb exploding 300 feet away from you? I can say I have. Ok before someone uses the TADA on me or something, it wasn’t a terrorist activity or anything. Ever heard of a building imploding? Or rather an attempt at it.

About a year ago, there was an explosion at the place where my dad worked. Sadly 2 men died that night. A year on, that part of the structure was decided to be brought down because it was no longer in working condition. Using explosives seemed like the fun logical way to do it.

We stood there for about 2 hours waiting for it to happen. No one was really told the exact timing of the thing. We just knew the timing in the range of say +-1 hour. We waited till it happened. The plan was to blow up the base in such a way that it would fall forwards (where there is nothing but open space). Now what happened was that the explosion cause the building’s base to come down and tilted it forward as expected (explosives on one side were lower than the other causing it to fall). Now it tilted about 10 odd degrees forward. Common sense says it should go over but.. it doesn’t! :o Something held it up! It actually rocked back and is resting on the building on the other side. A 64 mt tower leaned forward 10 degrees and actually rocked backwards again.. that’s amazing. I have no idea where it got all that force to counter act the momentum! (well we have estimates but meh).

Bottom line is that yes, I got to see a building implosion, a failed one at that. Now it seems they’ll try it again in a few days and I’d like to be there again :D It was fun. breast augmentation region central ny

The explosion was loud but not as loud as expected but you can blame the industrial ear buds my dad gave me for that ;) It didn’t “feel” all that heavy but I wouldn’t dare stand any closer :P I wish to live!

Here’s a note for timestamp’s sake. I got my glasses on the 19th of March 2003, 2 hours before getting my PC (so stop blaming the poor thing for my eyesight!). A few hours ago, I just went out and bought myself some contact lenses which I’ll be using almost daily. I might switch over to my glasses late at night when working on something (I wouldn’t want to remove them when I’m half sleepy, now would I? :))

Imagine Cup 2008 Gallery

under Microsoft at 4:30 pm on August 21st, 2008

Here’s a ton of pictures and videos from the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 which was held in Paris, France last month. Here’s a recap. Team SKAN won the Interoperability Award! For a more detailed report, please read the post I made about the Imagine Cup 2008 World Finals.

I’ve been raving about how awesomely beautiful the Eiffel Tower is at night. Don’t take my word for it, actually see the video in action ;) There are a few still pictures too where you can see the Eiffel Tower in its 3 states, blue, night light show mode (like the video below) and in the day time.

Here’s the Shimmering Eiffel Tower.

If you’re in the mood for some craziness, do have a look at 40 seconds of nothing on Channel 8, another one of Sriram’s “masterpieces” ;) As he said, be warned, this video has absolutely nothing which is remotely intellectual :P

I can’t not post a link to the first time we were on MSDN Blogs thanks to Mark :) Here’s the video interview he took of ours after we came second at the IC ‘08 India SDI Finals and its titled Team SKAN - Imagine Cup 2008 Software Design Interoperability Award World Finalists

Now its time for the grand finale for videos. Here’s a video of Team SKAN winning the interoperability. But wait, isn’t that what Sriram posted on SoapBox? Not quite. This is a video of Team SKAN winning the prize taken by a member of Team SKAN (Me) while going on stage. Not just that.. This video has everything. Joe Wilson starting off with the intro, then moving on to announcing the prizes and us screaming like crazy :P Subtitles for parts you can’t hear clearly (convos between us). I guess it’d also help those who can’t really understand Indian accents that well :P *pets dt and segosa* (A high resolution version of the video is available and shall be given on request)

Imagine Cup 2008 World Finals

under Microsoft at 11:31 pm on July 20th, 2008

The entire trip was amazing. The greatest experience ever. We flew to Paris, enjoyed the city and brought back 1st place in the interop award :D I’d write a huge detailed account but I’m too bored. Its been an age since I came back and writing down every single thing that happened during the 6 days at the competition and the 5 days we spent there on our own would be just too much. So here’s a brief overview of what happened :P
