Server killing

under Sitework at 4:14 pm on June 4th, 2008

Not my favourite thing to do when I’m busy with my exams, completing paper work for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 World Finals in France and working out stuff for the my Visa Application to France but yes, apparently this blog “killed” the dreamhost server I’m hosted on.

I checked up my statistics and it seems that my blog had 1106 hits yesterday. No brownie points for guessing that my post “AIEEE results are out” is to blame :P They guy at DH Support did see that I had WP-Cache on but evidently that wasn’t enough. He told me to get WP-SuperCache so I did. I replied and well, unlike what he said, site wasn’t up immediately and since I need the site accessible now for certain reasons, I had to manually remove the deny from all line they had added to my .htaccess :P Sorry about that but I waited almost an hour before doing that :)

As a test, I think I’ll add some adverts (though its against what I believe in) to that one post. That’s it. Lets see what happens. Though I’m already running out of time. Hopefully google will respond soon :) 1106 hits in one day is good enough for me to put ads up. May be I’ll put 3 ads on that page and just one on others and people who are regular here get no ads at all. There is a nice plugin I found to do that. Its called Friends don’t let friends see adverts. Lets see what I can pull up ;)

I also added google analytics to get a better picture of what’s going on with visitors on my blog.  I have dh stats but I can’t actively access them. I need to switch off fancy linking in wordpress :P Also, google analytics is a lot more detailed and attractive =p

Back to Visa applications and SSOS :P

Day of Reckoning approaches

under Sitework at 12:00 am on April 9th, 2008

I’ll just run you through things as they stand. I need to complete more or less all my journals and I need to study for ever subject if I hope to pass. Not to mention the few odd projects I still need to implement. Screw that. This isn’t a time to think of all the things you have to do. Its rather a time to reflect on things you’ve already done.

First of all, we (team SKAN) has made it to the India finals in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008. You can read about this on the AXIS Forum. I am also the proud owner of karunab.com. I’ve moved j@x over there. Have a look at the post about the new site!

So that’s basically it. There might be more but I’m really tired right now so I’m sorry. Have a good day and god speed.

India has Internet?

under Online Life at 6:14 pm on February 20th, 2008

Says who? The person who says so seriously hasn’t been to India. Or maybe he just never had to deal with Exatt (read: evil ISP). These guys are the bane of my existence. If it weren’t for them, life would seriously be a lot easier. I have 7 points to this post.

1) The guys at Exatt can read minds
No other way to explain it. Got to submit an important project? Need to do some research for a subject? Need to write an assignment? Want to learn something? Got a customer/competition deadline to meet? Want to audio chat with a family member?
If any of these are true for you, you can guarantee Exatt will be down. 9/10 if you have something important to do, they seem to be down. You could say its bad luck if it happens a few times but when it happens for 4 straight years, you know something is fucked.

2) They can redefine what ping stats are supposed to be!
Here is my current ping stats to google.
Ping statistics for 64.233.167.99:
Packets: Sent = 592, Received = 139, Lost = 453 (76% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 300ms, Maximum = 320ms, Average = 303ms
In case you’re wondering how I’m here, its because I am typing this out in scite now. May be when Exatt deems I haven’t got anything important to do on the internet (refer #1) it will allow me to come online.

Sitemaps

under Programming, Sitework at 7:22 pm on February 13th, 2008

I thought it was about time I made this site a bit better to access. We now have wordpress sitemaps being generated by a plugin and they are being submitted to the Google, Live Search and ASK search engines. The Web Management tools for the first two are pretty cool.
If there is anything else I should do for better search engine results/more traffic, do let me know. Pics of dt could help but we want to try non extreme measures :P

Things change..

under Academics, General Stuff, Sitework at 9:28 am on February 13th, 2008

This is true in so many ways, I don’t know where to start. Work this sem at univ seems endless but things keep changing. A lot of things have changed of late around me but more importantly the day which decides a major part of my future is coming close. The date and time have been decided. At 1300 IST on the 8th of July 2008 I shall give GRE paper. Lets hope for the best. Should be a good birthday present for lopardo, eh? :P

So this sem is going to be crazy. We need to hand in 3 projects at univ, I need to finish up with j@x and Scribble Scrabble, I need to study for GRE and for this sem itself (since I hope to score good marks this sem) and there is this other project I’ve been contacted about at univ by some seniors. Its awesomely amazing and needs students from at least 4 engineering branches. I always wanted to take part in something like this and if time permits, I’d love to work on it. I’m meeting the guys today so lets see where it goes from there.

On a side note, I got a mail from Google yesterday that my site had badware on it. On investigating I found that I was on a older version of WordPress and that it had a SQL injection vulnerability. WordPress has been updated and the problem has been fixed. I’m on the WordPress notify list now so this shouldn’t happen again.

Oh, and I’ve changed the theme to BloxPress 2. The old theme had a nice christmassy feel to it but it had a few issues. I liked Indigo more but quite sadly it doesn’t work properly here for some weird reason :( Enjoy the AJAX. ;)

AXIS Adminship

under Online Life at 12:31 am on January 13th, 2008

Sure.. I haven’t provided to the two odd people (from statistics, mean of average subscribers is 2 with a standard deviation of 0.5; oh wait.. too much math.. I guess Maths 5 can do that :P) who use the rss feed for my blog.. I don’t think they mind. Here’s an update.
Exams are over. Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of the Sem 3 Drama. A guardian angel or two at this time would help :)

You wasted 30 kb of your bandwidth in fetching this post because you need to be informed that me and motr_fresco have become the admins of the AXIS forum since the earlier admins are on a well needed break.

Well that’s basically it. That’s of course, good news for me and a bad one for my sister *cough* ;)
Hope 2008 is better than 2007, not that the latter wasn’t quite an amazing year in itself. There are a few things lined up for the first quarter, if all goes to plan. You should be happy to know that :)

OTH type things

under Online Life at 12:27 pm on November 2nd, 2007

I really have fun playing them. I don’t manage to solve all of them but I do solve a few here and there. I have managed to solve Hapland, Hapland 2, Hapland 3 (playing right now), relpats-eht (couldn’t solve level 10, like most of the world :P), relpats-eht 2 (solved 1-9 in 2 hours last night from 1AM to 3AM :P Can’t even understand level 10 :(), klueLESS,klueLESS 2 (don’t know if there is a level 3) and not pr0n are the famous ones I’ve solved.

I’ve heard IIM-A also has their very own OTH but I forgot what its called. Need to try that out. Sad I don’t get an opportunity to do these more often. Any more I should work on?
With a new version of j@x coming out, I might just add a page with hints and solutions to the questions :-)
I don’t really like ruining it for people and the fact that most people searching for this can’t solve any of the pages is sad but I believe sometimes even the best get stuck at some page and need help. I’ve certainly had my share of hints. Why not provide the same for others? :)

j@x 1.2 - Code Overhaul

under Projects, Sitework at 6:50 pm on October 29th, 2007

Its been almost a year since I coded j@x. Way too long. Its been a minimalistic piece of code for long enough. Time to add a bit more functionality but not at the cost of speed. I’m starting to add more features from today and you should see the changes in the next few days.

The changes (publically viewable) include:

    * More bbcode to work with.
    * A non-geek theme with theme switcher.
    * Better post box.
    * Use of cookies for user recognisation for comments.

Internal changes that are planned include a real administrator panel and on the fly editing of posts/comments. May be even a registration system for users who want to leave comments so that they could have email updates or update their own comments (only comments added after registration would be editable :P)

It starts with me installing PHP and MySQL on IIS 7 (Vista) to work then to move it on to the server.

This should keep me busy for a few days I guess ;) And oh, I need to study! :o

The it keeps on coming..

under General Stuff, Online Life, Projects at 1:05 am on December 23rd, 2006

Exams are finally over. 3 good papers and 3 bad ones. Don’t know what the future holds academically so I’ve decided to re-prioritize my activities for the next semester. Anyway, the holidays are here :D This is what’s been up for so long.

I completed my work on j@x and I also did a script called Uptime Challenge for the Messenger Plus! Scripting Competition. Work on my project for the AXIS will begin soon and in the mean while I got an early Christmas present. Its something that I desperately needed. A new keyboard. Its hot! :D I love the customisable multimedia keys. I can launch Winamp, edit its play list, jump tracks, launch PCTV and do anything I want with this. Its really cool :) I just got it today. All I need now is a good mouse but the ones I have my eyes on are too costly. So I’m not buying anything. That’s my PC shopping pretty much for a year or so at least ;)

Have a look at my new Navigator Keyboard ;)

Happy holidays and remember to keep out some cookies for Santa :cheesy:
