AXIS Adminship

under Online Life at 12:31 am on January 13th, 2008

Sure.. I haven’t provided to the two odd people (from statistics, mean of average subscribers is 2 with a standard deviation of 0.5; oh wait.. too much math.. I guess Maths 5 can do that :P) who use the rss feed for my blog.. I don’t think they mind. Here’s an update.
Exams are over. Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of the Sem 3 Drama. A guardian angel or two at this time would help :)

You wasted 30 kb of your bandwidth in fetching this post because you need to be informed that me and motr_fresco have become the admins of the AXIS forum since the earlier admins are on a well needed break.

Well that’s basically it. That’s of course, good news for me and a bad one for my sister *cough* ;)
Hope 2008 is better than 2007, not that the latter wasn’t quite an amazing year in itself. There are a few things lined up for the first quarter, if all goes to plan. You should be happy to know that :)

Here’s the season to be grumpy…

under General Stuff at 9:33 pm on December 4th, 2007

No, I didn’t mess up the song. Its the season I’m usually happy about. Nice cool weather is fun (at least here it is. Sucks to be Mr. Nitro :P) I’m grumpy because I have to give a few exams now. I’ll be all caught up giving 5 exams from the 7th of December to the 9th of January. Yes, that’s a month and 2 days for 5 exams. FU MU :P You seriously fail at time tables.

Anyway, Christmas time is here and so is a special christmassy header ;) Also my forum signatures have a distinct festive feel to them as well. Here are a few of the avatars and signatures I made/adopted from my existing collection.

Avatars
Godsend: Godsend Christmas Avatar

JA Beta: JA Beta (web 2.0) Avatar

Wiggles: Plus! Wiggles Avatar

The Godsend signature is brutally screwed up :( It could have been so much better :)
What do you think?

Overclocking my absence..

under Wassup at 2:05 am on December 2nd, 2007

I was off the computer for 10 days (probably for the first time in ages) because my motherboard had crashed. All attempts to fix it so far have failed but we’ll keep trying. In the mean while, I went out and got a new motherboard. Out with the Intel DG965RY and in with the ASUS P5KPL-E (Green).

That along with the fact that I got another gig of RAM (800MHz) means no more bottlenecks thus better performance. The 533MHz is out in the market so potential buyers for a Transcend DDR2 2×533MHz RAM in perfect shape should contact me.

I ran it for a few hours without an overclock but I just couldn’t resist. Pretty soon I’ll upload a bunch of pictures and cpu-z dump files in which I raised the overclock step by step.
Yes, I did kill it a few times. For one, the max speed I have had out of my RAM so far is around 840~850 MHz. For such cheap RAM (Rs. 1100), I couldn’t really expect it to go to 1067 MHz :P I hope to get it a bit higher though.
Kudos to ASUS AI CPR which allows CMOS recovery without jumper resets. Gotta love that. ;)

Right now Mystic Gohan is running its E6600 at 3GHz and the RAM is steam away at 835MHz. System is stable right now but 5-6 celcius above its normal temperature. I just want to see what’s the max I can get out of it. So far my best Super-Pi timing for 1M has been 17.375 secs. A week ago that would have been 22-23 seconds so cutting off nearly 5-6 seconds is great news!

Edit: EIST is still on for some reason though I swear I switched it off from BIOS ¬¬!

We have more RAM!

under General Stuff at 9:51 pm on November 20th, 2007

Oh yes, we finally have it. I’ve been waiting for a few months. Its finally here. 1×1024MB@800MHz giving me 2 GB of RAM in total :D Though I still have that 2×512MB@533MHz meaning my performance hasn’t improved by leaps and bounds according to Windows but so far, everything seems a lot smoother. Now I can have better multi tasking ;)

Plans are still under way to sell off the older RAM and get another 1×1024MB@800MHz. Still, future holds faster working and better multitasking :D

OTH type things

under Online Life at 12:27 pm on November 2nd, 2007

I really have fun playing them. I don’t manage to solve all of them but I do solve a few here and there. I have managed to solve Hapland, Hapland 2, Hapland 3 (playing right now), relpats-eht (couldn’t solve level 10, like most of the world :P), relpats-eht 2 (solved 1-9 in 2 hours last night from 1AM to 3AM :P Can’t even understand level 10 :(), klueLESS,klueLESS 2 (don’t know if there is a level 3) and not pr0n are the famous ones I’ve solved.

I’ve heard IIM-A also has their very own OTH but I forgot what its called. Need to try that out. Sad I don’t get an opportunity to do these more often. Any more I should work on?
With a new version of j@x coming out, I might just add a page with hints and solutions to the questions :-)
I don’t really like ruining it for people and the fact that most people searching for this can’t solve any of the pages is sad but I believe sometimes even the best get stuck at some page and need help. I’ve certainly had my share of hints. Why not provide the same for others? :)

j@x 1.2 - Code Overhaul

under Projects, Sitework at 6:50 pm on October 29th, 2007

Its been almost a year since I coded j@x. Way too long. Its been a minimalistic piece of code for long enough. Time to add a bit more functionality but not at the cost of speed. I’m starting to add more features from today and you should see the changes in the next few days.

The changes (publically viewable) include:

    * More bbcode to work with.
    * A non-geek theme with theme switcher.
    * Better post box.
    * Use of cookies for user recognisation for comments.

Internal changes that are planned include a real administrator panel and on the fly editing of posts/comments. May be even a registration system for users who want to leave comments so that they could have email updates or update their own comments (only comments added after registration would be editable :P)

It starts with me installing PHP and MySQL on IIS 7 (Vista) to work then to move it on to the server.

This should keep me busy for a few days I guess ;) And oh, I need to study! :o

One small step for JA..

under General Stuff at 3:32 am on September 27th, 2007

Excuse the insanely ghastly time but I just completed my first resume about 10 minutes back. I just thought that if I can stay awake till 3:15 AM in the morning writing a resume, I can surely write a blog note to remind myself about this a few years down the line. This is where it all started. Your first resume is exactly 2 pages long, consists of 2 fonts in 3 different sizes using 3 styles of writing and is a 18,548 byte long docx file having 671 words (or so says Microsoft Office 2007 :P)

Just a note to future me reading this one, you didn’t have a crazy flash urge to write a resume 1 AM in the morning. You needed to have one for your mock interview scheduled at your college on Friday. Even though its only a mock interview, hope the mock panel doesn’t mock you and hope it actually gives you the mock job :P

Time to sleep and pull a rabbit out of the hat when I (hopefully miraculously) get up at 7AM in the morning for a 9:30 AM Microprocessors lecture. Thanks for wasting one and a half minute of your time that you’re probably never going to get back :P Be sure to waste another precious 30 seconds writing a bitching comment about this :P Round numbers are so much better than fractions :P

NRMT: MSSP Scholarship

under Academics at 8:09 pm on September 10th, 2007

Today was the first day of this sem (on the JA calender) and boy was it a shocking one. First thing that happens as soon as I enter college is that I get congratulated by my friends. Why, I ask? Couldn’t be because of the PRAXIS. I told my friends on Saturday/Sunday and Monday morning is too early for people to find out. Especially people who don’t talk when not in college.
I asked them why I was being congratulated and to my surprise, I had received the Nagesh Rane Memorial Trust (NRMT) Scholarship under the Meritorious Students Support Program (MSSP).

They are paying IMS-India for their GRE Program. I have no idea what I should say, of course, this is a first. All I can think of is, thanks Prof. Nagesh Raghunath Rane

AXIS Core

under Announcements at 2:30 pm on September 8th, 2007

3 posts in 3 days.. That doesn’t usually happen often but this latest one is just for the ones who know The AXIS in any shape or form.
After the events over the past few days, I’ve just been informed that I’ve been inducted into the AXIS Core. I guess congratulations are in order, for myself :P

I’m not a man of many words when it comes to such things. This was certainly a surprise. I was expecting this day to come in a month or two when I’d get down to finishing dP2P for the release of Scribble Scrabble 1.0 (the long duration because of over due college work, nothing else :P) but hey, I’m not complaining.

I enjoyed my time as an AXIS member for 1 month and 29 days. It was fun being part of the AXIS support team for 1 months 22 days and each one of the 1 year, 1 month and 12 days I’ve spent as an AXIS Aspirant have been educational.
Now the inf days I shall spend in the AXIS Core should certainly be enlightening. :)

You can read about the official post by SaM on the AXIS RDC.

May the greenness shine upon you. ;)

PRAXIS 07: Day 2

under Programming, Wassup at 10:12 pm on September 7th, 2007

Day 2 got off to a late start with me reaching VESIT by 11:20 and directly being summoned to the 4th floor for the first elims of Brainwave. We cleared that with not too much difficulty. Then it was off to the 1st floor for the SupremaC elims. It was 12:30 and my usual partner Anand was unable to make it. So was Amith’s usual partner so we teamed up for the SupremaC elims. The paper was really good. Had fun. Little did we know that we’d score a 108/125 and be in first place :D

Then came the second elims of Brainwave and we were screwed royally. We got around 20 marks worth of stuff right but probably so did another 5-8 teams of the 30 in this round. Of course, we hadn’t solved any of the 7 mark tie breaker questions which were, needless to say the toughest.

On to the SupremaC finals and this year, each finalist team was given 2 comps to work with. The questions were quite tough. Q1 was, as I just found out, BrainFuck. Looks like someone copy pasted. I had heard of it before but didn’t know what it was. I wouldn’t be able to remember the multiplication function that we didn’t solve there anyway :P
Basically we scored 90 marks out of a max of 150. The winning team got 120. So the results were…
